Illinois gas prices

See Illinois fuel infrastructure See your local terminals in Illinois

Illinois is one of the more expensive Midwest states for gas, and Chicago is the reason. The city and surrounding Cook County add local taxes on top of already-high state taxes. Drivers in Chicago can pay 30 to 50 cents more per gallon than drivers in downstate Illinois.

Outside of Chicago, prices are more reasonable. The state has several refineries and sits in PADD 2 with good pipeline access from the Gulf Coast. Downstate Illinois prices are competitive with Indiana and Iowa. But the statewide average gets pulled up by the Chicago metro area, which accounts for most of the state's fuel consumption.

Why is gas so much more expensive in Chicago?

Chicago and Cook County add substantial local fuel taxes on top of state taxes. The city also requires a special reformulated gasoline blend. These factors combine to make Chicago gas some of the most expensive in the Midwest.

How do Illinois gas prices compare to Indiana?

Indiana is almost always cheaper, often by 20 to 40 cents per gallon, especially near the Illinois border. Many Chicago-area drivers cross into Indiana to fill up. Indiana has lower taxes and the massive Whiting refinery right on the border.

Does Illinois have its own refineries?

Yes. Illinois has several refineries in the central and southern parts of the state. But their output mostly serves downstate areas. Chicago's fuel comes primarily via pipeline from Gulf Coast and Midwest refineries.
